How It Began

A Community Response to a Real Need

The New Zealand Sikh Women’s Association came into existence as a community response to an acknowledged need — supporting women experiencing domestic violence in a new country. The primary clients of NZSWA are women, families, and children within the South East Asian community living in South Auckland and Counties Manukau.

🕰️ Our Journey

Key Milestones

From fortnightly prayers to a full-service organisation — here’s how NZSWA has evolved over the years.

2002

Founded by Migrant Women

A group of dedicated migrant women came together to form NZSWA, recognising the urgent need to support those experiencing domestic violence while resettling in New Zealand.

Early Days

Otahuhu Sikh Temple

Initially, the association met fortnightly at the Otahuhu Sikh Temple — gathering for prayers and dinner while building a foundation of trust and community support.

Growing

First Dedicated Space

As the community grew and more clients sought help, NZSWA moved into a small room at 214 Great South Road, Otahuhu — establishing its first permanent base for delivering support.

Today

A Thriving Organisation

NZSWA continues to grow day by day — offering holistic services, workshops, outreach, and crisis response to migrant families across South Auckland and Counties Manukau.

💡 Our Approach

A Holistic Response to Family Violence

Taking into account the changing social environment, NZSWA identified the need for a holistic approach — strengthening and empowering migrant families who experience the dynamics of family violence while resettling into a new society.

🌏

Language Barriers

People in the community face challenges daily due to language barriers — we bridge the gap with culturally appropriate communication.

⚖️

Knowing Your Rights

Many migrants don’t fully understand their rights in a new country — NZSWA helps educate and empower individuals and families.

🤝

Community Support

From a small group to a thriving organisation — we continue to grow and serve families through outreach, workshops, and direct support.
